Frozen birthday party

I like to think hosting a birthday party for twenty kids and twenty parents is a good way to keep some semblance of normalcy during the terribly stressful period of transition in foreign service life.  Either that, or I'm completely nuts.  We hosted the party in between Addie and Bella's birthdays so both girls could have a special birthday with their friends one last time in Ethiopia.
They are all obsessed with the new Disney Frozen movie (me included, who isn't?) and it was a fun theme to plan.  My parents had send treat bags and homemade lollipops from a candy shop on the Oregon coast. Bruce's Candy Kitchen makes candy that is not only beautiful but it's also delicious.  The twirly pops went well with our frozen theme as a take-away gift.
We spent the Sunday prior to the party hanging balloons and streamers and snowflakes.  I purchased Frozen character decals to place on the walls.  For the party activity, I fell back on my usual craft of decorating sugar cookies.  I just didn't have it in me to be creative so the kids were given pretty bags with two snowflake sugar cookies and sprinkles to decorate them. I made my favorite sugar cookie frosting that dries nicely and let the kids dig it out of little dishes with a knife.  For the Christmas party I took the time to put the frosting in bags for piping (Good Lord am I nuts?).  I decided that was too time consuming. The craft was a hit.  Ultimately, I've decided the main reason kids (and grownups) love this so much it because frosted sugar cookies are a wonderful indulgence.  I spotted lots of moms and dads stealing bites of their kids creations.
Bella and her best friend Teffase decorating cookies.  These two ate the entire ramekin of frosting together.
The day of the party ended up being one of the rainiest, non-rainy season days I've seen in Addis!  But we weren't deterred.  I scanned our must-drink-before-we-leave liquor cabinet and came up with two cocktails the parents could enjoy during the party.  One contained a gorgeous espresso granita and Kahlua.  Delicious!  The rain didn't seem so gloomy when you have something sweet and boozy to drink.

Lunch was Mediterranean beef kofta and chicken kebab sandwiches with hummus, tzaziki sauce  and homemade pitas. I spent a good part of the week prior planning and prepping the meal. The kids enjoyed baked mac 'n cheese with broccoli.  If I'm being real, the parents enjoyed the pasta as well.  I had splurged on American sharp cheddar cheese.  After eating local cheese for so long, American cheddar tastes super salty and sharp and just plain rich!
The cake was the real hero of the party.  I wanted this cake to blow my girls' minds and I was rewarded greatly when they saw the final product. I planned this cake for months.  I ordered the Frozen figurines as well as the sugar snowflakes.  The three tiered cake was frosted with light blue vanilla buttercream and vanilla meringue frosting for snow.  The bottom tier was chocolate with caramel filling, the middle tier was orange with orange curd filling and the top was chocolate with strawberry filling.  The blue tinted sugar "ice" was made with the same technique as I used here.  It was much easier with simply shattering the candy.  This cake required a lot of labor but every single minute was a labor of love for me.  You can see some more detailed photos over at Ladytroupe Sweets blog.
The party was so much fun and the kids all had a great time.  It was the first party where Addie wanted only her girlfriends from her class to attend.  Bella had a few little boys from her class that are her close friends but for the most party the party was very girl-heavy.  It was sweet and a little less loud and crazy.  I find that even at first grade the girls and boys get in groups at parties and get one another all riled up.  It's so funny to see at such a young age.  Anyway, I'm certain we have lots of girls only parties coming in our life.  That is until it suddenly is cool to invite boys again.

It was a relief to have this party finished so I could get back to my organizing and sorting for our move.  But truth be told, I am also a little sad that we won't be throwing parties in this house anymore.  It's been a great house for entertaining and we've thrown some seriously epic parties in Ethiopia.  It's been a good entertaining run for me.  I will miss it.

Adelaide Rose turns 6

Yay! Another birthday to celebrate.  Ashlynn's got "Happy Birthday" down now along with the blowing of the candles and the clapping!  We love celebrating and this week it was for our sweet Addie.

With every year that passes, on my first born daughter's birthday I inevitably think about that first memorable moment when I became a mother.  That first trip to the maternity ward and all the emotions that went along with it.  She was my first and she's been nothing but magical since.

This year has been full of change for Addie. Starting kindergarten and learning to read has opened up a new world for her. It's been amazing to see her personality blossom and watch the excitement in her eyes when she writes her own stories.  She's still very artistic and I am amazed at some of the fantastical scenes she draws with great detail and care.

She is truly the leader of her sisters.  As the oldest this comes naturally but I am thrilled that Addie loves both her younger sisters and cares for them.  She is fairly responsible and more than once I've seen her take care of Bella and Ashlynn in sticky situations.  She's a wonderful big sister.

Adelaide has embraced jeans and tennis shoes.  Thank God!  There was a moment when I thought she'd be pure princess and I am so happy to see that she's so much more than that.  She's athletic, clever, smart, and creative.  She just also happens to be beautiful.  I love watching her climb onto the school bus with her gym clothes just as much (maybe even more) than when she climbs on with her skirts and dress shoes.

Some of her favorite things are movies!  She takes after her father in this regard.  She loves to sit and get absorbed in a story.  On the other side of things, she also loves to read and be read to.  She adores writing her own stories and then reading them to me.  She still loves wrestling with her Dad. She loves playing catch, riding her scooter and now her new bike.  She loves spaghetti, cheese burgers, fish and rice (her choice for her birthday dinner), and watermelon.  She's the only of our daughters that has a limit on her sweet tooth.  After a few bites of something too sweet she pushes it aside.  She's not extremely keen on breakfast but she gets CRAZY when she's hungry (just like her mama).  She loves to bake with me and is better than most adults at cracking eggs and whisking together ingredients.  She loves playing make believe with Bella.  In fact, the two of them love playing together so much I rarely have to plan play dates for either of them any longer.

Addie is pretty cautious when it comes to new things.  She doesn't like being the center of attention (unless she's at home with her family).  At home she'll act out elaborate variety show type productions with her sisters but in a different crowd she won't even stand in line to take a turn at hitting the piƱata at a birthday party.  The other night she expressed her nerves about going to the first grade and having a new classroom and classmates.

Sometimes, I find myself expecting Addie to act older and be more mature than she really needs to be.  I think this is simply because she's the oldest and on most occasions rises to the challenge.  But she is only 6 now and I have to remind myself that she's allowed tears and meltdowns just like her younger sisters.   She's allowed to whine and fuss at times.  She certainly is allowed to be six years old.

Every new thing Addie learns and does amazes me.  Just the way she uses such grown up words to describe her feelings and situations at school with friends.  It reminds me that she is growing so fast.  I like to keep a memory of her and I close to my heart when I feel like she's growing too fast.  I was home from work still on maternity leave after Addie's birth.  I was rocking her on my chest in her rocking chair.  The creaking lulled us both to sleep and for a few blissful minutes I slept while she slept perfectly contented to have her little cheek pressed to my chest.  It was just the two of us and the afternoon light shone through her nursery window and I could have rocked like that for eternity.

She's going to grown, no matter how often we urge her to slow down and stay little.  She triumphantly announces that "It will happen...I will be _ "(4, 5, 6, 7), ever year now.  I can only hope that every year my lovely daughter and I can hold on to this precious bond we've developed and hopefully keep it strong and let grow right along with her.

The other night Justin and I were reading in bed and like most nights one or both of us comments on how amazing our children are and how much we love them.  This night I said "Isn't it amazing that for the rest of our lives we get to be apart of our daughters lives?"  I think about that often.  It truly is an amazing gift!

Arabella Jun turns 4

Our sweet Bella Bean turned four yesterday.  She has requested that her favorite color, green, be showcased for her birthday this year.  So I made mint chocolate chip ice cream with homemade hot fudge.  Amazing! The house is decked out in green buntings!
Bella is our little dreamer.  She's our fighter too.  From the moment she was born she has been our spicy girl.  She's stubborn and contrary just to be contrary.  A good way to get Arabella to do what you want her to do is act like you don't want her to do it, or comment that you don't think she could handle it.  We struggle with her on basic things like getting herself dressed or sitting at the dinner table to eat a meal.  She comes up with completely imaginary reasons she can't do these things.  Usually, her legs hurt or she can't walk. A good example of a typical Arabella challenge is after her bath we lay out her pajamas and encourage her to focus on putting them on herself (OK, I might "encourage her the first 19 times I ask, after that I shout).  We usually hear some tears, whining and most likely a few "my legs are tired!"comments.  The minute I mention that I don't think she's big enough to put on her own pajamas or that surely those pajamas are just too hard for her to manage; she snaps to it and starts putting them on with a smug little smile on her face.

It's impossible not to completely adore this girl.  We find ourselves talking about her and her antics after the kids are asleep.  Bella's the one who generally says something hilarious and I have to call Justin at work to relay it to him before I forget.  She's a character and we love her. Especially her quirks.
Green Crocs for Bean

Arabella has a fantastic imagination.  She's typically singing and dancing.  All her imaginary play requires her to sing everything her toys are saying.  Often things get so dramatic that I end up asking her if she's OK, only to hear "I'm just playing Mom!".

She's pretty klutzy, at least once every other week she has a major fall and I'm certain that THIS is the time that I will have to call the embassy and figure out how to race her to one of the horrific hospitals in Addis for her bones to be set for a cast.  Luckily, we haven't had any broken bones but her legs are in a constant state of watercolor shades of purple, blue and yellow.  One of her front teeth was bruised from a fall and is now permanently discolored.  She already has two small scars on her face.  She's a mess and I do worry about her more.  She's just going to require a bit more worrying than the other two throughout life.

It's wonderful to watch Bella grow.  She's extremely independent and lovable.  She brings us so much joy every day of our lives.  Our family would not be the same without our Bella Bean.  Happy Birthday precious girl!  We love you.

oh yeah- I had a birthday

My birthday was on Easter and with my concerns over getting my catering job done, I completely forgot to mention it on the blog (other than posing photos of my amazing self made birthday cake over here).

It was a spectacular day and I made a delicious Easter ham meal. My girls made me cards and shared extra hugs.  What more could a gal want?
Speaking of birthdays and more; I am dying to share news about my amazing birthday gift from my husband but it really deserves it's own post!

thirty four

My spectacular husband turns thirty four tomorrow and we are lucky enough to have his mother in town visiting on his birthday.  She's a crafty card maker and was tickled to get the task of cutting out my triangles for Justin's birthday bunting.  I'm slightly obsessed with hanging bunting on our mantel.  Can you tell?  He celebrates the day before St. Patrick's day every year so I couldn't help but showcase some green.
I can't wait to celebrate with our family tomorrow.  Of all the cakes I make he's requested the same thing that he does every year.  Carrot cake!  I can't complain.  It's delicious.

Thirty four is going to be a wonderful year for my love. I can just tell!

Ashlynn's Halloween Birthday Party

We celebrated Ashlynn's first birthday with a Halloween bash Saturday. Complete with a spooky playlist, cookie decorating and tasty food.  I was really happy with how it all turned out and it seemed as though our friends and their children all enjoyed themselves.
The birthday girl loved the frosting on her birthday cake.  She toddled around in her owl costume and after it got too hot, her birthday dress.  Then after her dress was covered in food a plain old onesie.  Ashlynn mostly had no idea all the fuss that day was about her, but we had fun celebrating our little girl.
Lunch:
Baked macaroni and cheese (which is a recipe that still needs some work and needs quality cheeses-alas I'm stuck with the cheese available in Addis Ababa)
Squash and bacon pasta with walnuts and garlic
Romesco spread
Spinach dip
Salami, tomato, olive and provolone melts
Green salad with citrus honey mustard dressing
Strawberry lemonade

Dessert:
Ghost meringues
Pumpkin sugar cookies with butter cream frosting
Caramel corn
Polar bear cake
We opened up Ashlynn's birthday presents later that afternoon.  Eneye made Ashlynn a traditional Ethiopian embroidered dress.  Tutu, Eneye's daughter was pretty thrilled with spending the day with Ashlynn.
